“A Royal Affair” is a Danish historical drama produced in corporation between several European countries. It has a budget of €6,4 m. and has received financing from three Cine-Regio member funds, Film i Väst, West Danish Film Fund and Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung. West Danish Film Fund has supported the production with €67.000 while Film I Väst invested 200.000€ and MDM gave €65.000 in distribution support and €100.000 in production support. The movie was mainly shot in the Czech Republic in the Barrandov Studios and on location in Praque and 20 other sites around the country. The production also moved to Dresden for at few days of shooting while the rest of the production was done in Denmark. The locations and castles of 18th century Denmark was digitally recreated by the West Danish company Ghost.

“A Royal Affair” had its world premier in the main competition at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival and received two silver bears, one for best male actor and one for best script.

Synopsis: “A Royal Affair” is a historical drama based on the true story of Johann Struensee, the royal physician to the schizophrenic Danish King Kristián VII. Struensee ended up having a passionate affair with the young Queen, fathering her child and for a period becoming the de facto ruler of the kingdom. The story is well known in Denmark and many books, both factual and fictional, have been written. It is however the first time that the dramatic story is being told on screen.
